Every teacher has heard it. A student finishes the page, looks up, and reports that the reading happened but the understanding didn’t. The eyes moved. The words were said. Something was completed — but it wasn’t reading.
In Module 1 we said reading is making sense. This module is about what making sense actually looks like from the inside — the part of reading we cannot see — and what skilled readers do the moment the text stops making sense.
Read this straight through, once, the way you’d read anything. Don’t analyze it yet — just notice what it feels like.
Picture this stretch of your life as a reader. You’ve got a few open minutes and you’re scrolling a long-read site, the kind that mixes essays and science pieces. You move down the page fast, sizing up each one — title, first line, maybe the photo — and deciding in a second whether to keep going or move on. A headline stops you: “Skipping sleep does more than make you tired, it leaves something behind in your brain.”
You’re curious, and a question forms before you’ve even decided to read — Leaves what behind? I thought sleep was just rest. You’re in.
The writer mentions the brain “clearing waste” overnight, and you pause to pull up what you already know about sleep. REM, you think. Dreams. The eight-hours rule everybody repeats. You’ve heard somewhere that going without sleep wrecks your reaction time — something about it being as bad as drunk driving. You half expect this to be one more lecture about going to bed earlier, so you brace for it. The article goes somewhere you didn’t predict.
As you read, some of your questions get answered and new ones take their place. The writer explains that the brain runs a kind of overnight cleanup, flushing out the junk that builds up while you’re awake — and that most of it happens during deep sleep, not the lighter stretches at the edges of the night. You revise the picture you walked in with. You’d been treating sleep as the brain powering down for the night; now it reads more like the brain clocking into a different job, one that needs the deep hours to get done.
A few paragraphs are packed with terms you don’t really know — cerebrospinal fluid, slow-wave sleep, a protein you can’t pronounce that’s tied to Alzheimer’s. You don’t stop and untangle each one. You skim for the point and come away with it: the deep part of sleep is when the cleanup happens, you can’t fully make it up later, and running short has a real cost. One line lands hard — the channels that wash the brain out open wider during deep sleep and barely move while you’re awake. (So the all-nighters weren’t free, you think. I’ve just been carrying the tab.) The text keeps throwing pictures at you: fluid moving through the brain like a slow tide, the channels widening in the dark, the day’s residue getting carried off while you’re out cold.
When you reach the end you’re still holding questions. How much of the damage sticks? Is there anything that makes the cleanup work better? Do I actually need to change what I do at night? You sit with it for a second and notice that something shifted. You don’t think about sleep the way you did three minutes ago. It’s stopped being the thing you cut first when you’re busy. Now it’s the shift when the crew comes in to clean up, and you’re the one deciding whether to let them work.
The scenario you just read shows a reader thoughtfully engaged with a written text. We call it learning when we merge new information from texts with prior knowledge stored in our minds.
Now let’s go back through it — slowly.
Below are six moments pulled from the scenario you just read. At each one, we’re going to ask the same thing: what’s happening in this reader’s head right here? Watch how often the answer comes down to one move — the reader checking that the text still makes sense.

Not one sentence of the article has been read yet. Has comprehension started?

What is all that old knowledge doing here?

The reader’s old picture and the article stopped matching. What did the reader refuse to do?

Three unknown terms, and the reader sails right past them. Has this reader stopped monitoring their comprehension?

Why does this one line land so hard?
“When you reach the end you’re still holding questions… You don’t think about sleep the way you did three minutes ago.”
The article is over and the reader still has unanswered questions. Did comprehension succeed?
Go back through the six moments and notice what the reader never once asked: “What strategy should I use here?” Every move came from a single, non-negotiable standard: this has to make sense. When it did, the reader kept going. When it wobbled, the reader fixed it. When a detail didn’t matter to the sense, the reader let it go. Researchers call this the reader’s standard of coherence — how much “making sense” a reader demands of themselves before they’re willing to move on. Skilled readers hold that standard high. And holding it requires knowing, moment by moment, whether you’re meeting it.
That moment-by-moment awareness is comprehension monitoring. Skilled readers actively monitor their understanding as they read. They notice when something does not make sense, when ideas seem to conflict, or when a text does not fit with what they already know. Rather than continuing on without understanding, they stop, reread, revise their thinking, ask questions, make inferences, and search for clues that help restore meaning.
Proficient readers do not say, “I read it, but I didn’t understand it.” They know that reading means you understood it.
Many struggling readers, though, continue reading even when meaning breaks down — and may not recognize that comprehension has been lost. Teachers sometimes miss this because comprehension is largely invisible: the thinking that produces understanding happens inside the reader’s mind. So the student who says “I read it, but I didn’t get it” is actually a step ahead of the one who says nothing — at least they noticed. The student who never notices is reading with the standard turned off.
The moves you watched in the scenario have names — the reader activated prior knowledge, asked questions, visualized, inferred, determined importance, and synthesized. Those names are useful for us as teachers, because they let us model the moves precisely and notice them in students.
But look at how the moves actually showed up: never announced, never one at a time, never all six, always in service of the standard. The reader reached for a move the way you reach for a light switch in the dark — because something needed it, not because it was next on a list. The research says the same thing: what improves comprehension is not the strategy itself, but the reader’s active pursuit of meaning. Strategies are taught briefly and used as needed. The goal is always understanding the text — never using the most strategies.
The test for our classrooms: if a lesson could be described as “today we practiced inferring,” the strategy has become the destination. If it’s “today we figured out why the author ended the chapter that way — and inferring is how we got there,” the strategy is doing its real job.
What we teach students to carry, then, isn’t a strategy list. It’s the questions the standard asks: What am I wondering? Does this make sense? What is being implied but not directly stated? Should I reread? The goal is those “Aha! I get it!” moments, when readers develop personal interpretations of an author’s message and establish their own take on a text’s meaning.
The moment a student notices that something stopped making sense is a win — the standard is on. What comes next is repair, and readers follow a path: find where it broke down, name what the problem is, try it in your own words, look back, look forward. These aren’t five lessons to teach one at a time; they’re the moves a reader reaches for at the moment of repair, and you can model them out loud any time a text pushes back on you.
Monitoring is invisible, so give students a way to leave tracks. Text coding — a small set of marks students make while they read — turns the standard into something everyone can see. A circle around a word you don’t know. A question mark where meaning wobbled. A star where something mattered. An exclamation point where the text surprised you.
Marks like these do two jobs at once: they give students a reason to notice what’s happening in their own heads while they read, and they leave a trail you can look at afterward. Hold onto that second job — it becomes the whole story in Module 5.
