Comprehension happens inside a reader’s head, where nobody can see it — and yet you read your students’ thinking all day long. This module is about the windows. Your writing gathers into a summary you can copy at the end.

Think about all the ways your students showed you their thinking about texts this past year — the things they said in discussion, the notes in the margins, the retells, the drawings, the answers, the questions they asked you. Every one of those was a window into thinking you couldn’t otherwise see.
If comprehension is an invisible process, how can teachers know whether it is happening? One way to think about this is to distinguish between comprehension as a process and comprehension products as evidence of that process. The process happens internally as students construct meaning while reading. Comprehension products are the things students say, write, retell, explain, answer, discuss, draw, annotate, or create in response to a text. A retell, a summary, an answer to a question, a written response, a discussion contribution, an annotation, or even a sketch can provide evidence of the understanding a student has constructed while reading.
The reading standards describe many of these comprehension skills as products teachers can observe — referring to textual evidence, determining central ideas, analyzing characters and events, interpreting words and structure and point of view, evaluating across texts. And meaning is refined through the other strands of literacy too: students deepen understanding through discussion, through growing precision with language, and through writing that extends, organizes, and strengthens thinking.
When students talk, write, question, explain, and respond to texts, their thinking becomes visible.
But not all products reveal the same amount of thinking — and they aren’t all trying to. First, test the distinction itself.
For each item, decide whether it is a comprehension process (invisible thinking work) or a comprehension product (visible evidence the teacher can see).
The process is the goal; the products are the evidence. That’s the working distinction the rest of this module is built on. Now put it to work on real student thinking.
Remember Marta and the ferry from Module 4? A class has just read it, and the question on the table is the one you answered yourself: why did the author end with the waving line? Here are four windows into four students’ thinking. For each one, decide what it shows you.

Aiden wrote it on his own. Bella wrote it after her teacher walked her there: “Look at the last line. What did people on the ferry do? Do people on the bridge do it? So what changed?”
Same sentence, word for word. Same evidence?
Multiple-choice assessments serve a real purpose as summative measures: they are efficient, comparable, and they capture something specific — whether a student can pull all their reading skills together independently, on an unfamiliar text, without a teacher beside them. That is a genuine outcome worth knowing. It’s Standard 10’s question, asked and answered. But a selected answer shows only that endpoint. You see where they landed, not the path they took — which is why a summative score leaves a teacher with little to act on instructionally.
The richest diagnostic evidence comes from formative assessment — the evidence students generate daily through annotation, discussion, phrases jotted into a graphic organizer, the short written response. These products carry traces of the thinking itself: the connections made, the inferences drawn, the confusion noticed and repaired. And they show how much support the thinking needed.

Reading comprehension develops through an ongoing cycle of knowledge building and strategic thinking. As texts become more complex, students return to active reading behaviors — rereading, questioning, monitoring understanding, searching for evidence — and over time these habits become increasingly internalized. Skilled readers approach challenging texts with the mindset of a problem solver: “Let me reread, find clues, and figure out what this means.”
That persistence in making meaning is the hallmark of a skilled reader engaged in text-based thinking.
